Building a library

We were blessed to receive quite a few books as gifts for the girls before they were born. I was so excited to get a library started for them before they were even here.

Fall consignment sales will be coming up soon and I'd love to add even more! Here's where I need your help...what are some books that we must have? I'd love to hear some of your kids favorites titles so I can be on the look out for them.

Thanks for your help!

  1. I did a book review post for kids not too long ago...(http://www.mythoughts-uninterrupted.com/2013/06/book-reviews-kiddie-style.html)...we are loving the Pete the Cat books currently!

  2. We love Pete the Cat, too! I'd say Dr. Seuss, The Giving Tree, Where the Wild Things Are, Madeline, any Eric Carle, Corduroy, The Little Engine that COuld, Jan Brett (gorgeous illustrations!), The Runaway Bunny, Goodnight Gorilla, and Little Blue Truck are the ones that we read over and over and over and over.

  3. The Kissing Hand! Mother Goose Rhymes are great as they really engage kids. I agree with Lauren above-any Eric Carle and Goodnight Gorilla were all favorites of my babies who are now ten and almost 15! I will say Dr. Seuss are more for older kids, younger ones have a harder time with their attention span since they are looonnngggg books. Oh and Go Dog Go is a great book for learning colors, in and out, top and bottom, etc. Have fun!

  4. Sandra Boynton is a perfect author for this stage with your girls! They will love her books during the baby and toddler years!

  5. Sandra Boynton, Dr Seuss condensed books (shorter books for babies), Time For Bed by Mem Fox, (anything by her for that matter!) Richard Scary books for their later years, anything by Karen Katz, Peek-A-Who, I Am A Bunny by Richard Scary. How many suggestions did you want because I could go on...?!?!?! :)

  6. Are your girls signed up for the imagination library? It's a program Dolly Parton has. You will get a new book every month for their first 5 years.
The llama llama books are really good.

  8. Counting Kisses, You are My I Love You, any books by Jamie Lee Curtis, Sandra Boynton, Snuggle Puppy, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If you Give a Moose a Muffin....and all the others in Laura Jaffe Numeroff's series, Don't Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus, The Wheels on the Bus, The Little Engine that Could, Cookie's Week, Five Green and Speckled Frogs, Down By The Bay, all nursery rhymes, poetry, books with repetition. I am a reading teacher for grades: 1 - 5 and the more children are read to, the more successful they are when learning to read. It is important for them to hear the rhyme and the repeated patterns in text. However, the most important thing is to read to them every single day!!! Have fun with books. Give them as gifts, make them exciting and fill your house with books! Happy Reading!
